As anticipation builds for the ACC vs. SEC Challenge, the matchup between the Duke Blue Devils and the Auburn Tigers is generating significant buzz. Auburn’s head coach, Bruce Pearl, has emphasized the profound importance of this game for his team.
In a recent press release from the Auburn basketball program, Pearl remarked, “It’s hard to put in perspective exactly what this opportunity means for our Auburn Basketball program. To be selected by ESPN and our conference to compete against one of the greatest programs in the history of college basketball is tremendous recognition for where our program is at right now.”
This will mark the fifth meeting between Duke and Auburn, with Duke holding a 4-0 record over the Tigers. The last encounter was in 2018 during the Maui Invitational semifinals. This game will also be Auburn’s first visit to Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1981.
Reflecting on the matchup, Pearl acknowledged the challenges and the honor that comes with facing a storied program like Duke. “It’s also a tremendous responsibility,” he added. “Personally, coaching in Cameron Indoor Stadium against head coach Jon Scheyer and the Duke Basketball program will be extremely meaningful to me. I know that it will be the same for our players and coaching staff.”
Auburn enters this game fresh off an SEC Tournament Championship, though their season ended in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 64 against Yale. Key to Auburn’s hopes will be Johni Broome, a Third Team All-American, who returns for his final year of eligibility. Broome, who averaged 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last season, was named the Most Valuable Player of the SEC Tournament and earned a First Team All-SEC selection.
On the other side, Duke aims to pursue its own championship goals, led by Cooper Flagg, the expected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
This exciting matchup is set to showcase the talents and competitive spirits of both teams, highlighting the respect and responsibility that come with such high-profile games.
