Breaking: Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Announces Key Starting Quarterback Decision
The Minnesota Vikings are entering a new era without Kirk Cousins, and one quarterback is emerging as the frontrunner.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced on Wednesday that Sam Darnold will begin training camp next month as the team’s starting quarterback. O’Connell emphasized that he expects a “competitive” camp across multiple positions.
“We haven’t had to put out a depth chart or anything like that,” O’Connell said of the quarterback position, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. “But yeah, I would say Sam would be the guy I would look to based upon the spring he’s had, and really where he’s at in his career and his quarterback journey. What he’s been able to do coming in and [hitting] the ground running and taking advantage of a competitive situation.”
Darnold, a former No. 3 overall pick, spent last season as Brock Purdy’s backup in San Francisco. At just 27 years old, he signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings in March.
Minnesota also made a significant move in this year’s draft by selecting former Michigan champion quarterback JJ McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick. Additionally, the team has veterans Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall on the depth chart. Despite rumors that McCarthy has been performing well at OTAs, the six-year veteran Darnold will start training camp as the Vikings’ primary quarterback.
