Could the Toronto Raptors Trade Up in the NBA Draft?
As the NBA Draft approaches, many are speculating whether Masai Ujiri has a plan to secure a higher pick for the Toronto Raptors.
With the NBA Draft just two weeks away, the question on everyone’s mind is whether the Toronto Raptors will try to move up into the lottery or stick with their current picks. Currently, the Raptors hold the 19th and 31st picks after losing their original lottery pick to the San Antonio Spurs.
As Toronto continues its rebuild, speculation is mounting about whether Raptors President Masai Ujiri and General Manager Bobby Webster will trade up in the draft.
Kevin O’Connor’s podcast on The Ringer speculated on the possibility of Toronto trading up, but it remains just that—speculation.
Despite frequent rumors about the Raptors shopping the market ahead of the draft, it’s rare for them to make a significant move. Ujiri has often expressed a preference for working within free agency over trading. However, he does have a history of success in the NBA draft, a history he hopes to continue after a few challenging years for the team.
What Does Toronto Have to Offer?
One name that stands out in trade discussions is Bruce Brown. Brown, who joined Toronto as part of the Siakam deal with the Indiana Pacers, had a lackluster end to the season. Many speculate that the Raptors are eager to trade Brown while his value is still high. Pairing him with one of their current draft picks could create an enticing package for a team with a lottery pick.
Why They Might Not Make the Trade
Ujiri has labeled this draft as “weak,” suggesting that good talent can be found anywhere in the draft. He cited past successes like picking Pascal Siakam 27th overall and O.G. Anunoby 23rd overall as examples. With the 19th pick, Ujiri might believe he can find another late first-round gem, similar to players he could get at the 10th spot or even lower.
Moreover, Ujiri could be saving Brown for a move during free agency or closer to the season. Once the big names in free agency are secured, Ujiri could use Brown in a sign-and-trade or a deal with another team seeking a veteran bench player.
What Are the Stakes?
The next year is crucial for Ujiri and Webster. After the poorly received Kyle Lowry trade and the loss of Fred VanVleet in free agency, the front office has faced criticism for several moves, including the Siakam deal, the failure of Jontay Porter, the mishandling of Malachi Flynn, and the odd Jalen McDaniels and Jakob Poeltl trades. Although the Anunoby trade has been successful, fans expect more as the team rebuilds.
With Scottie Barnes’ first free agency looming, it’s essential for the Raptors to have a solid plan to become a winning team again.
So, will the Toronto Raptors trade up in the 2024 NBA Draft? Only time will tell, but the stakes are high for Ujiri and Webster as they navigate this pivotal period for the franchise.
