Good News: Brewers Sign Elieser Hernández to One-Year Contract

The Milwaukee Brewers have bolstered their pitching staff by signing Elieser Hernández to a one-year contract. In a corresponding move, RHP James Meeker has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville, and LHP DL Hall was transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL to make room on the roster for Hernández.

Hernández, who previously pitched for the Marlins from 2018-2022 and had a brief stint with the Dodgers in 2024, is set to begin his tenure with the Brewers in the bullpen. Despite his struggles this season with an 8.38 ERA in five appearances, his career stats show potential, with an average of 8.6 strikeouts and 2.9 walks per nine innings. Brewers manager Pat Murphy is optimistic about Hernández’s role, suggesting he could transition into a starting role if needed, given the team’s current injury challenges.

Meeker, meanwhile, was optioned after making his MLB debut in a recent game against the Tigers, where he pitched a scoreless ninth inning, escaping a jam to finish the game.

Injury Updates:

10-Day/15-Day Injured List:

  • LHP Robert Gasser (left flexor strain): Gasser was placed on the IL on June 5 and is awaiting further opinions on his injury. He’s 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA this season and last pitched on June 1.
  • RHP Joe Ross (low back strain): Ross was placed on the IL on May 21 after exiting a game early. He and the Brewers are hopeful for a short stint on the IL.

60-Day Injured List:

  • RHP Jakob Junis (head, right shoulder): Junis is making progress in his rehab, having recently pitched for Triple-A Nashville. He is expected to continue his rehab in Arizona and could return by mid-June.
  • LHP DL Hall (left knee sprain): Hall, who struggled with knee issues, has made significant progress in his rehab and is expected back in June. He was moved to the 60-day IL to accommodate Hernández on the roster.
  • RHP J.B. Bukauskas (right shoulder inflammation): Bukauskas is progressing in his recovery and is expected back in mid-June.
  • OF Garrett Mitchell (fractured left index finger): Mitchell is nearing a return and could rejoin the Brewers as early as mid-June.
  • RHP Devin Williams (back stress fractures): Williams, the Brewers’ closer, is on track to return by late July after dealing with stress fractures in his back.
  • LHP Wade Miley (torn UCL): Miley will miss the rest of the 2024 season due to UCL surgery and is expected back in 2025.
  • RHP Brandon Woodruff (right shoulder): Woodruff underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to return in late 2024 or 2025. He signed a two-year deal with the Brewers and will rehab in Milwaukee.

This influx of new talent and the return of key players from injury provide the Brewers with a significant boost as they navigate the season.
