Breaking News: The Bruins Sent the 32-year-old Star A Gift Basket Over His Heroism…

Breaking News: Bruins Show Gratitude to Evander Kane for Defending Marc Savard

The Boston Bruins expressed their appreciation to Evander Kane by sending him a gift basket for knocking out Matt Cooke in a 2010 fight. This gesture was in response to Cooke’s infamous hit that ended Marc Savard’s career.

Matt Cooke, notorious for his controversial and often dirty style of play, retired with more penalty minutes (1,135) than games played (1,046) over his 16-season NHL career. His reputation was cemented by numerous suspensions, totaling six for various infractions.

One of Cooke’s most infamous moments came on March 7, 2010, when he delivered a blindside hit to Marc Savard, then a member of the Boston Bruins, during a game with the Penguins. This hit caused a severe concussion that Savard never fully recovered from, effectively ending his career. Although he didn’t officially retire until 2018, Savard only played 32 more games, with his last appearance in 2011. The incident also prompted the NHL to modify its rules to prevent similar dangerous plays.

Evander Kane fighting Matt Cooke

Karma seemed to catch up with Cooke a month after the hit on Savard when he fought Evander Kane during a game between the Penguins and the Thrashers. The rookie Kane delivered a knockout punch, ending the fight swiftly and decisively.

In a recent episode of Pardon My Take, Kane shared that he has rewatched the knockout hundreds of times and revealed that the Bruins sent him a gift basket later that year as a token of gratitude for defending Savard. Kane said, “I actually got a gift basket from the Boston Bruins later that year in the offseason because of what he did to Marc Savard.”
