Cleveland Cavaliers Eyed as Potential Landing Spot for Jimmy Butler, According to NBA Insider
For several months, there have been subtle hints that Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat might be parting ways. Should this split occur, the Cleveland Cavaliers could emerge as a prime destination for the All-Star forward.
Butler’s tenure with the Miami Heat has been marked by notable highs and lows since he joined the team in 2019 following a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers. In his first season, Butler led the Heat to an unexpected NBA Finals appearance against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, where he delivered impressive performances, averaging 27.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. However, the Heat fell short, losing the series in six games inside the Orlando Bubble.
A few years later, Butler and the Heat returned to the NBA Finals, this time facing Nikola Jokic’s Denver Nuggets. Despite their determination, they were defeated in five games. The past season saw the Heat’s playoff run end abruptly in the first round, largely due to Butler being sidelined with a knee injury. His absence was keenly felt as Miami struggled without their star player.
Now, both the Heat and Butler face an uncertain future. With Butler’s contract extension pending, it remains unclear whether he will stay in Miami, be traded, or sign with a new team as a free agent.
Cleveland Cavaliers Considered Potential Destination for Jimmy Butler
There is no definitive word yet on whether Miami’s front office will offer Butler a contract extension and a max contract. Should they opt not to, the Cleveland Cavaliers could be a strong landing spot for him. As Anthony Pasciolla discussed in an article for Sports Illustrated, pairing Butler with All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell could be a strategic move.
“This is just me talking, I didn’t ask anybody questions or anything like that. But the one team that, if they were willing to trade Jimmy, I don’t know if they are, the one team I would pay attention to is the Cleveland Cavaliers,” NBA insider Keith Pompey suggested.
“Because Rich Paul said if you give Donovan Mitchell an extension, then you know they probably want to get Darius Garland out of there. Now that’s what the reports are saying, but I think that right now it’s up to Cleveland to make a decision. But to me, I don’t know if Jimmy would want to go there,” Pasciolla elaborated.
The Cavaliers have the assets to acquire Butler, with Darius Garland’s role overlapping with Mitchell’s on the roster. Similar considerations apply to Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, who could be part of a trade package to Miami.
If Butler joins Mitchell in Cleveland, it would undoubtedly shake up the Eastern Conference. Much attention will be on this potential move, especially if the Heat decide against offering Butler a max contract extension in the coming months.
