The San Francisco 49ers have a critical task ahead: securing wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with a contract extension. Aiyuk, who led the team in receptions and receiving yards last season, is entering the final year of his contract, making his retention essential.
Insider Matt Barrows reported on 95.7 The Game that the negotiations with Aiyuk have been “difficult.” The recent large extensions for star wideouts across the NFL have increased the market price, complicating the 49ers’ efforts to keep him.
Aiyuk has consistently improved over his four seasons in the league, recording 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023, solidifying his position as the team’s top receiver.
The 49ers also face the need to extend quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract soon, which could lead to financial challenges and the potential trading of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. However, the team appears to be preparing for such scenarios.

In April’s draft, they selected wideout Ricky Pearsall from the University of Florida, who has impressed during offseason workouts. Additionally, by extending star running back Christian McCaffrey’s contract, the team has slightly increased its salary cap space.
While Aiyuk trade rumors have subsided since the draft, the team remains hopeful that both parties will eventually reach an agreement on an extension.
