Auburn Makes a Move for Texas TE Commit Emaree Winston!
AUBURN, Alabama—Four-star tight end Emaree Winston, committed to Texas and hailing from Calhoun, Georgia, recently visited Auburn for the first time since his 8th-grade camp with the Tigers. His official visit to Hugh Freeze’s program left a strong impression, making him reconsider his commitment to the Longhorns.
“Considering I hadn’t talked to them and just started communicating with them when Coach Ben (Aigamaua) came to my spring practice, I had shut my recruitment down,” Winston said. “Auburn helped themselves a lot. We hadn’t talked before, and now we talk every day. I wake up to a Bible verse every morning, which my mom and I love. It means a lot because, at the end of the day, God comes first, and they’re putting that first.”
“Coach Ben is my guy. He has great energy. I like the way he coaches and interacts with his players. We’ve built a good relationship.”
During his visit, Winston spent time with the coaches, toured the campus, and learned about the program. He was particularly impressed with Auburn’s focus on utilizing tight ends, inspired by the performance of Rivaldo Fairweather last season.
“The development of the tight ends was key,” Winston said. “Coach Ben showed me how they use them and highlighted 13 (Fairweather), who’s really a standout on the team. They basically do the same things I do.”
Winston’s initial decision to commit to Texas was influenced by the development of tight ends in their program. However, the proximity of Auburn, just over two hours from his home, is becoming a significant factor as he continues to evaluate his options.
“When I first made my decision, distance wasn’t a factor. Now, seeing how Auburn uses their tight ends, it’s something to consider. My mom, dad, and sisters would come to every game, whether I’m at Texas or here.”
Another factor working in Auburn’s favor is the commitment of Ryan Ghea, a close friend of Winston. Ghea, who will be in the same position group, has been influential as Winston becomes more familiar with Auburn.
“I met Ryan in ninth grade at a Georgia camp, and we’ve been close ever since,” Winston said. “We talk almost every day. He committed to Auburn and I committed to Texas, but he still wanted me to come to Auburn. We’ve got a good relationship.”
As Winston continues to weigh his options, Auburn’s efforts and proximity to home are making a significant impact on his recruitment.
