Cardinals Star on Struggles: ‘I Don’t Know What the Answers Are’
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the Cardinals’ 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, sparking hope that the third baseman might be emerging from a season-long slump.
Following Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Reds, Arenado opened up about his challenges at the plate. “It’s bad,” he told John Denton of MLB.com. “The swing is not good.”
Arenado elaborated, “I’m a guy that pulls the ball in the air and I haven’t done that all year. I don’t know what the answers are. I’ve got to continue to try to find it. I can see the difference between when I was good and when I’m not, but trying to apply it in games right now is really hard for me.”
The 33-year-old has been a consistent power hitter, tallying at least 30 home runs and 100 RBIs from 2015 to 2022, except during the shortened 2020 season. In 2023, he narrowly missed these marks with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs. However, this season, Arenado has just four home runs and 25 RBIs through 52 games.
Arenado’s current slugging percentage (.366) and OPS (.677) would be the lowest of his 12-year career. His lack of production has significantly impacted a Cardinals’ offense that is performing below league average in major offensive categories.
Adding to the team’s woes, Arenado’s defense, typically a strong point, has faltered. He made a costly error in Monday’s loss, leading to two Reds runs that secured their victory.
Despite Arenado’s struggles, the Cardinals have shown resilience in May. They have won 11 of their last 14 games, climbing to third place in the National League Central.
