Maple Leafs Could Target Golden Knights’ Theodore & Thompson in Marner Deal
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ offseason narrative centers around star winger Mitch Marner. Following their playoff exit, rumors have swirled about his potential departure. General Manager Brad Treliving is carefully evaluating all options regarding Marner, whose no-trade clause could complicate any potential move. While no contract extension or imminent trade discussions are underway, speculation continues about teams that might be interested in the creative playmaker.
One such team could be the Vegas Golden Knights, who, despite their own cap challenges, possess two assets the Maple Leafs could covet: defenseman Shea Theodore and goaltender Logan Thompson. Acquiring these players would bolster Toronto’s blue line and provide stability in goal.

Theodore’s Strong Two-Way Game
The Golden Knights face tough roster decisions, especially after acquiring Tomas Hertl and Noah Hanifin. Retaining Theodore long-term is challenging, particularly with other key players like Jonathan Marchessault to consider. For the Maple Leafs, Theodore would be a prime acquisition as a top-pairing defender. Despite injury setbacks, he consistently produces 40–50 points a season and logged 42 points in 47 games last season, with an impressive average ice time of 22:05.
Theodore’s defensive prowess is notable, with 27 takeaways compared to 22 giveaways, and his mobility and puck-moving skills would benefit Toronto. His contract, with a cap hit of $5.2 million, is manageable, and his modified no-move clause might not impede a trade. Acquiring Theodore would address Toronto’s need for a mobile, two-way defender.
Thompson’s Reliable Goaltending
While Joseph Woll shows promise as a starter, his injury history is concerning. Logan Thompson could be a crucial addition in net. Despite splitting duties with Adin Hill, Thompson posted solid numbers this season: a 2.70 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. His performance at 5-on-5 was strong, with a .919 save percentage and a 2.34 GAA. Thompson’s postseason showing, with a 2.35 GAA and .921 SV%, further proves his reliability.
Though Marner might have fetched a first-round pick, Thompson and a second-round pick are valuable assets. With Thompson’s affordable salary ($766K) and Ilya Samsonov’s free agency, Toronto could comfortably extend Thompson’s contract.
Marner’s Fresh Start
While Toronto gains cap space and key pieces, the Golden Knights would acquire a dynamic top-six player. Marner, a three-time 90-point scorer and two-time All-Star, would thrive in Vegas’ offensive system, potentially alongside Jack Eichel. Even with some retained salary, the move would be beneficial for both teams.
Ultimately, whether or not Vegas becomes a trade partner, Theodore and Thompson represent significant assets that could immediately impact the Maple Leafs, providing depth and setting the stage for future success.
