Jannik Sinner took the lead to finish Roland Garros as world number one. The 22-year-old Italian, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, is currently ahead of Novak Djokovic in the live rankings.
Despite injury concerns before the tournament, Sinner advanced to the second round at Roland Garros by scoring a convincing 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Christopher Eubanks.
Djokovic, who regained the top spot in September, now faces a tough challenge. The 37-year-old Serbian must reach at least the final in Paris to have any chance of retaining his status as world number one.
Expressing his mindset ahead of the tournament, Djokovic said he had “low expectations and high hopes” of defending his title. He is due to face wild card Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in his first-round match on Tuesday.
