Setback in Justin Jefferson’s Contract Talks with the Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings boast two promising wide receivers on their roster. Justin Jefferson, poised to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league, and Jordan Addison, their 2023 first-round pick, who is already showcasing exceptional talent as a WR2.
Jefferson, in the final year of his rookie contract, is set for a substantial payday, potentially around $35 million annually. However, a former NFL executive doubts the Vikings’ ability to sustain high salaries for both Jefferson and Addison. The looming question is whether extending Jefferson might eventually cost the Vikings their rising star, Addison.
Addison, entering the second year of his four-year rookie contract, also has a fifth-year team option and franchise tag possibilities, meaning the Vikings could retain him for six to seven more years, though it would become costly.
Randy Mueller, a former NFL executive and current contributor for The Athletic, suggests a different strategy. He believes that if he were in charge of the Vikings, he would consider trading Addison before his contract becomes expensive.
Jefferson, widely regarded as the league’s best receiver, is a must-extend player for Minnesota. However, Mueller warns that Jefferson’s new contract will tighten the team’s financial flexibility, potentially making Addison a cap casualty when his rookie deal ends in 2026 or later.

Mueller also points out that the Vikings will face broader financial challenges. Key players like Christian Darrisaw will need new contracts, while Brian O’Neill and TJ Hockenson are already well-paid. The Vikings will also need to budget for other roster upgrades.
The key point is that extending Jefferson will necessitate sacrifices elsewhere on the roster. Whether it’s Addison or another significant player, tough decisions will have to be made. The flexibility could come from having a quality quarterback like J.J. McCarthy on a rookie contract, assuming the Vikings’ assessment of him proves accurate.
General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has demonstrated skill in balancing the roster financially and a willingness to invest in critical players. However, these two objectives often clash, leading to pivotal decisions that can shape the team’s future.
As Jefferson’s contract extension looms, Adofo-Mensah will need to navigate these challenges carefully, determining how to maintain a competitive roster while managing the escalating costs of their star players.
