Suspect Arrested in Shooting That Injured Auburn Player Brian Battie and Killed His Brother Tommie
Brian Battie, an Auburn football player, remains critically injured and on a ventilator following a tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of his brother, Tommie Battie. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze shared an update on Brian’s condition, requesting continued prayers for his recovery.
On Wednesday, May 22, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 28-year-old Darryl Bernard Brookins. Brookins was apprehended with the assistance of a U.S. Marshals Task Force and charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently detained at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility.
The shooting occurred early on Saturday, May 18, at the Tallywood Centre Plaza parking lot in Sarasota. Deputies responding to the scene found Tommie Battie, 24, deceased. Four others, including Brian Battie, 22, were transported to hospitals in Manatee and Sarasota counties. The identities of the other victims have not been disclosed.
Brian Battie, who began his collegiate career at South Florida before transferring to Auburn, was one of the injured. His former coach, Hugh Freeze, posted on social media on Monday, May 20, asking for prayers due to a setback in Brian’s condition, stating that he remains on a ventilator.
Tommie Battie, who also played cornerback in high school, was remembered fondly by his community. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the Battie family with funeral and medical expenses, raising over $97,000 to date.

The Auburn community continues to rally around the Battie family, hoping for Brian’s recovery and offering support during this tragic time.
