Among the quarterbacks chosen in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the selection of J.J. McCarthy at No. 10 by the Minnesota Vikings has sparked considerable debate. Recently, veteran analyst Greg Cosell highlighted a significant concern that could potentially hinder McCarthy’s transition to the NFL stage.
In a discussion on the “Ross Tucker Podcast,” Cosell pointed out a notable absence of sheer throwing power in McCarthy’s game, a trait highly valued in the NFL.
“McCarthy seemed to exert significant effort to make throws that should have been routine,” Cosell remarked. “His entire body seemed involved in the process, requiring optimal conditions to deliver the ball effectively.”
Despite McCarthy’s impressive journey leading the Michigan Wolverines to an undefeated season and a shot at the national championship, doubts persist regarding his arm strength, limited experience, and whether his success at Michigan was inflated by the team’s overall talent.
While acknowledging potential improvements in McCarthy’s physicality and mechanics, Cosell suggests that his current limitations categorize him as a quarterback in need of development.
The reality of McCarthy’s abilities likely lies somewhere between his collegiate success and his NFL potential. As Cosell implies, McCarthy might benefit from a period of refinement, possibly a year or two, which the Vikings organization seems inclined to afford him.
Despite investing a top-10 pick in McCarthy, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah recently indicated to ESPN that they don’t intend to rush his development. Instead, the Vikings plan to rely on seasoned veteran Sam Darnold, the former No. 3 overall pick, to steer the team while McCarthy continues to progress towards readiness for the starting role.
