Breaking News: Patriots Secure Another Seasoned Star!
According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Joey Slye has swiftly found a new team as the veteran kicker commits to the Patriots.
Slye’s departure from the Jaguars occurred on Tuesday, following Jacksonville’s acquisition of Riley Patterson during the draft, which rendered Slye surplus to requirements. Despite this setback, Slye’s extensive experience in 78 games positions him as formidable competition for Chad Ryland during training camp.
Chad Ryland, selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, had a lackluster rookie season. The 24-year-old struggled with a 64% success rate on field goals, notably faltering with only five out of ten kicks between 40 and 49 yards. Although Ryland’s extra point attempts were near flawless, his performance fell short of Nick Folk’s, leading to Folk’s release by the Patriots last offseason.
While Ryland remains under contract for three more years, teams often act swiftly to secure replacements when necessary. Slye, aged 28, could emerge as the Patriots’ preferred option depending on his performance during training camp and preseason. With previous stints at the Panthers, Texans, and 49ers, Slye brings a wealth of regular-season experience, primarily with the Commanders.
Slye’s standout performance came during a six-game stint with Washington in the 2021 season, where he converted all 12 field goal attempts. Despite continued success, Slye’s accuracy declined over the past two seasons, prompting the Commanders to add Brandon McManus in free agency. Slye’s subsequent move to Jacksonville before the draft sets the stage for his endeavor to secure a roster spot with the Patriots.
