The Cincinnati Bengals have secured their backup quarterback, Jake Browning, with a fresh two-year deal, the team revealed on Tuesday.
Browning, who initially joined the Bengals’ practice squad in 2021, showcased his talent last season, boasting an impressive completion rate of 70.3% on his passes. In his nine appearances, he amassed 1,936 yards, threw 12 touchdowns, and had seven interceptions. Notably, Browning filled in admirably for Joe Burrow, who suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Week 11, guiding the team to a 4-3 record as a starter.
In his debut start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on November 26, Browning displayed promise, completing 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards, along with one touchdown and an interception. Following this, he led the Bengals to three consecutive victories. However, despite his efforts, the team narrowly missed out on a playoff berth, losing two of their final three games.
With his new contract, Browning is set to remain with the Bengals until 2025. Additionally, the Bengals bolstered their quarterback depth by signing free agent Logan Woodside to a one-year deal on the same day.
Woodside, a seventh-round pick by the Bengals in the 2018 NFL Draft, brings experience from his stints with the Atlanta Falcons and the Tennessee Titans. Although he has seen limited action, completing 4 of 7 passes for 34 yards and an interception in his 14 NFL appearances, his addition provides valuable depth to the Bengals’ quarterback roster.
