Frankie Montas exits Reds game after being hit by a line drive.
Reds Face Pitching Challenge After Frankie Montas Exits Game Due to Injury
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas endured a frightening moment during Sunday afternoon’s game when he was struck by a blistering 101 MPH line drive off the bat of Taylor Ward in the top of the 1st inning. Despite making the play to retire Ward at first base, Montas immediately received attention from the training staff before exiting the game.
As Montas walked off the mound, it was evident that he was favoring his right arm, holding it at a 90° angle against his body. His departure left the Reds with a significant challenge, forcing them into a bullpen day with no clear starter available.

Compounding the issue, the timing couldn’t be worse for the Reds, as Nick Martinez, their most capable pitcher for multiple innings, had already pitched three innings in the previous game and was unavailable. With no off days in sight for another 11 days, the Reds face a daunting task of managing their pitching staff effectively over the coming stretch of games.
Should Montas be sidelined due to his injury, the Reds may consider shifting Martinez back into the rotation to avoid calling up a minor league starter. However, this would leave a void in the bullpen that would need to be addressed. The team will have to await further evaluation of Montas’s injury to determine the extent of his absence and the subsequent impact on their pitching staff.
