Marlins southpaw A.J. Puk sidelined due to shoulder fatigue!
On Saturday, the Miami Marlins took the step to place A.J. Puk, their left-handed pitcher, on the 15-day injured list due to left shoulder fatigue.
Puk’s performance on Friday against the Chicago Cubs saw him concede seven runs and seven hits in just three innings, contributing to an 8-3 loss. This outing marked Puk’s return to the big league since April 9, following a setback due to an illness.
His season stats reflect a challenging start, holding a record of 0-4 with a hefty 9.22 ERA across four starts.
Manager Skip Schumaker acknowledged Puk’s struggles, stating, “A.J. has been dealing with some issues since the cramping in his hand and grip problems a few games ago.” He added that despite efforts, Puk couldn’t get back on track, leading to discussions about his next steps and recovery timeframe.
Puk, about to turn 29, previously served as a reliever during his first four years in the majors, boasting a record of 13-11 with a commendable 3.72 ERA in 142 appearances.
The Marlins find themselves dealing with a depleted pitching roster, missing key starters like Sandy Alcantara (recovering from Tommy John surgery), Eury Pérez (also sidelined due to Tommy John surgery), and Braxton Garrett (nursing a left shoulder impingement).
To bolster their pitching depth, Miami promoted right-hander Kyle Tyler from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader at Wrigley Field. Additionally, left-hander Josh Simpson, dealing with left elbow ulnar neuritis, was moved to the 60-day injured list.
In response to the doubleheader, right-hander Roddery Muñoz was enlisted as Miami’s 27th player. Meanwhile, the Cubs tapped into their resources, calling up left-hander Luke Little from Triple-A Iowa as their 27th player.
