The Boston Celtics received sobering news ahead of their anticipated clash with the Miami Heat in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series, as center Luke Kornet has been ruled out due to a right calf strain.
Kornet’s absence comes as a surprise given his recent participation in the Celtics’ final regular-season game against the Washington Wizards. In that game, the 7-footer delivered an impactful performance, contributing 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks in a 132-122 victory.
Throughout the season, Kornet has proven himself to be a reliable backup center for the Celtics, averaging 5.3 points and a career-high 4.1 rebounds per game. His efficiency, shooting 70% from the field and an impressive 90.7% from the free-throw line, has been noteworthy.
While Kornet’s role isn’t as a starter, his absence presents an opportunity for other players to step up. Leading the charge in the frontcourt will be centers Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, who are expected to shoulder the majority of the big man minutes for the Celtics in Game 1.
In Kornet’s stead, attention turns to Xavier Tillman Sr., who was acquired by the Celtics just ahead of the trade deadline in February. Despite occasional health concerns, Tillman has appeared in 20 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. His defensive prowess and physicality in the paint could prove invaluable against the Heat.
Following Tillman, Neemias Queta emerges as another potential contributor. The young center, who recently earned a full-time contract with the Celtics, has demonstrated his capabilities with an impressive performance in the regular-season finale, recording 19 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks in just 19 minutes of play.
Despite the setback with Kornet, the Celtics maintain a relatively favorable injury situation compared to the Heat. Miami’s star player, Jimmy Butler, is sidelined with an MCL injury, while Terry Rozier is also out due to neck spasms. Despite these challenges, the Heat managed to secure a playoff spot with a convincing victory over the Chicago Bulls in the Play-In game.
As the Celtics and Heat prepare to renew their postseason rivalry, both teams understand the importance of depth and resilience in navigating the challenges of playoff basketball. With injuries impacting both sides, Game 1 promises to be a fiercely contested battle on the court.
