The Texas Rangers received a significant update regarding the status of pitcher Max Scherzer over the weekend, shedding light on his recovery progress from a previous injury.
Amidst a series of pitcher injuries plaguing the team, Max Scherzer’s rehabilitation has been a focal point. Following surgery for a herniated disc last December, Scherzer’s projected return was initially slated for June or July.
However, there appears to be positive momentum in Scherzer’s recovery, as confirmed by Texas manager Bruce Bochy in an interview with Jon Morosi of MLB Network:
“Max Scherzer is expected to begin his minor-league injury rehab assignment on Wednesday,” Bochy stated in the MLB Network interview. “The Braves and Rangers meet in our Showcase Game at 7 pm ET.”
Earlier reports in the week hinted at Scherzer’s accelerated progress, suggesting a potential return to the Rangers in May. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports elaborated on Scherzer’s cautious optimism, noting, “Scherzer told me last week that he’s still a little bit cautious about this whole thing only because he has to pass each step with everything checked off. But so far so good—he has checked every box, and they’re looking forward to him returning much sooner than expected.”
In February, Scherzer provided an update on his condition, expressing feeling “great” but opting for caution despite the absence of pain. While maintaining fitness, Scherzer has yet to receive full clearance for baseball activities, although he was observed playing catch on Wednesday without facing hitters.
Scherzer’s imminent return presents a significant boost for the Rangers, particularly amidst their ongoing pitching woes. Alongside Scherzer, the team is contending with injuries to pitchers Cody Bradford, Jacob deGrom, and Tyler Mahle.
Bradford’s recent placement on the 15-day IL due to back soreness interrupted a strong season start, marked by a 1.40 ERA in three starts. DeGrom and Mahle are both in recovery from Tommy John surgeries last year.
Scherzer’s track record as a three-time Cy Young Award winner underscores his impact potential for the Rangers. With a storied career spanning stints with various teams including the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, and Los Angeles Dodgers, Scherzer’s resume boasts 214 career victories, multiple All-Star appearances, and two World Series titles.
While challenges persist with extended absences of Mahle and deGrom, Scherzer’s return to form bodes well for the Rangers’ postseason aspirations, reminiscent of their previous World Series championship run.
