The sequence of events unfolded rapidly. On April 5, 2024, the Brewers claimed Vladimir Gutierrez off waivers from the Miami Marlins. Assigned to Triple-A Nashville, Gutierrez made two appearances, allowing seven earned runs. Now, a mere fortnight after joining the Brewers, he finds himself traded to the Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations.
Gutierrez’s departure stemmed from being designated for assignment on April 17, 2024. This move was necessitated by the addition of Tobias Myers to the roster. When a player is designated for assignment, the team must provide other clubs with the opportunity to claim him via waivers or explore trade options. Boston opted for the latter, securing Gutierrez via trade to avoid the risk of losing him to another claiming team.
While this transaction may seem minor, it adds to the recent history of trade activity between the Brewers and the Red Sox.
