Braves Adjust Roster, Bring Up Versatile Utility Player!
Ahead of their upcoming series against the reigning World Series champions, the Texas Rangers, the Atlanta Braves are making adjustments to their roster, notably adding utility player Luke Williams from AAA Gwinnett.
Williams, 27, joined the Braves last June after being claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. While his time on the active roster last year was limited to seven games, during which he remained hitless in nine at-bats, he showcased his versatility by filling various roles, including pinch running and playing at first and third base, as well as left field.
The decision to bring up Williams seems to be motivated by his ability to play multiple positions. Over his three-season career in the majors, he has demonstrated his flexibility by appearing at every defensive position except catcher, even taking the mound for an inning with the Dodgers.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Forrest Wall has been optioned to AAA Gwinnett. Wall had earned a spot on the Opening Day roster after an impressive offseason and spring training performance, batting.308/.400/564 with three home runs, three stolen bases, and ten RBIs in Grapefruit League play.
However, with limited opportunities in the Braves’ crowded outfield, Wall only managed one at-bat in the first three weeks of the season, primarily due to the frequent use of Adam Duvall and Jarred Kelenic as pinch-hitters.
Despite his sparse playing time, Wall showed promise in a similar role last season, batting .462 with one home run, two doubles, and six runs scored in limited action. Additionally, he proved to be a reliable pinch-runner, successfully stealing bases in five out of six attempts.
Sending Wall to Gwinnett, where outfielders Skye Bolt and Eli White are currently sidelined with injuries, will allow him to get regular playing time and stay sharp in case he’s called upon again at the major league level.
