Pirates’ Head Coach Weighs Options in Wake of Marco Gonzales’ Injury
An unexpected setback has hit the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starting rotation, prompting speculation about who will step up to fill the void left by Marco Gonzales.
Left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales, after delivering a commendable performance against the Philadelphia Phillies last Saturday by limiting them to just two runs across six innings, found himself sidelined with forearm inflammation—a timing unfortunate for both Gonzales and the Pirates.
Despite having made no decisions in his three starts, Gonzales, at 32, has showcased promise with an ERA of 2.65. This marks a significant comeback for him after being limited to only 10 starts with the Seattle Mariners last season due to forearm surgery.
The Pirates now have the task of considering their options to replace Gonzales, with some flexibility afforded by the schedule. Thanks to upcoming off days, the team won’t require a fifth starter until next Wednesday, when they face the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park, allowing time for deliberation.
Internal candidates for Gonzales’ spot include left-hander Josh Fleming and right-handers Roansy Contreras and Luis Ortiz, all of whom competed for rotation slots during spring training. While currently utilized in relief roles, they remain capable of pitching three to four innings if called upon.
Additionally, the Pirates have options at Triple-A Indianapolis, namely right-hander Quinn Priester and left-hander Eric Lauer. Priester, already on the 40-man roster, presents an accessible choice, boasting a solid performance with a 1-1 record and a 3.95 ERA in three starts.
Although still considered a rookie, Priester has displayed potential, despite a challenging debut season in the majors last year. Lauer, not on the 40-man roster after signing a minor-league contract recently, brings experience with 112 starts over six seasons, including a successful stint with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pirates pitching coach Oscar Marin’s track record, though mixed, has shown an ability to revitalize veteran left-handed pitchers, such as Jose Quintana and Tyler Anderson. There’s optimism that Marin could work his magic again with Lauer.
Amidst the mix, Paul Skenes emerges as a standout candidate. The first overall pick in last year’s draft has delivered a stellar performance in Triple-A, tallying 9.1 scoreless innings with 19 strikeouts in three starts. However, general manager Ben Cherington has ruled out an immediate promotion for Skenes, opting for a cautious approach.
While fans eagerly anticipate Skenes’ major-league debut, the Pirates must rely on Priester, Lauer, or one of their relievers in the interim. The anticipation for Skenes’ arrival remains palpable, highlighting the excitement surrounding the team’s pitching prospects.
