Texans’ Defensive Star J.J. Watt’s Sentiments and Regrets Revealed Amid Retirement…
As J.J. Watt bids farewell to his illustrious NFL career, he’s opened up about his feelings towards the teams he wished he could have played for, particularly before his recent retirement.
In 2021, when Watt entered free agency for the first time in his career, his choices were limited. Ultimately, he landed with the Arizona Cardinals. However, he recently confessed that if circumstances had been different, he would have preferred to don the green and gold of his hometown team, the Green Bay Packers.
Reflecting on his time in Houston, Watt expressed deep appreciation for the city and its people. However, his heart lies in Wisconsin, where he grew up just a stone’s throw away from Lambeau Field. Fondly recalling the unique bond between the Packers and their community-owned team, Watt mused, “That’s one that always would have been really cool.”
He said;
“There’s a story for another day,” Watt said at the time, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I can’t share. That’s a story for like a memoir someday. … There was certainly a thought for that. Sometimes, things don’t materialize in a way it’s all going to, you know.”
Hailing from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Watt’s roots run deep in the state. His stellar college career at the University of Wisconsin further solidified his connection to the area. Despite the Packers making moves in free agency during 2021, including signing edge-rushers, they couldn’t match the lucrative offer Watt received from the Cardinals, closing the door on a potential homecoming.

Reflecting on what could have been, Watt hinted at untold stories and future memoirs. His journey, though not leading to Lambeau Field, is nonetheless decorated with accolades. Over 12 seasons, he amassed an impressive resume, including five All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowl appearances, and three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. Notably, he retired as the Houston Texans’ all-time leader in sacks, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries.
As Watt bids adieu to the gridiron, his sentiments towards the Packers offer a glimpse into the road not taken, yet his legacy in the NFL remains indelible.
