Texas Longhorns tight end Gunnar Helm is gearing up for what could be a breakout season in 2024, fueled by a blend of talent and unwavering determination.
Despite being surrounded by NFL-caliber talent last season, Helm showcased glimpses of his potential in the Burnt Orange uniform. Now, with the spotlight firmly on him, Helm sees the upcoming season as his chance to shine brighter than ever before.
In a recent media appearance, Helm expressed his fervent desire to elevate his game and lead the Longhorns to success. Reflecting on the disappointment of past seasons, particularly a 5-7 campaign, Helm emphasized his hunger for redemption and championship glory.
“Coming here my first season being 5-7, no bowl game, coming from a predominantly-winning high school program, I wasn’t really used to losing,” Helm remarked. “Getting all the way up to the peak and falling at almost the highest peak, I’ve never been more hungry in my life for anything.”
While many may wonder how Texas will fill the void left by standout tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, Helm remains undaunted by the challenge. Rather than aiming to replicate Sanders’ success, Helm is focused on carving out his own legacy alongside his teammates.
“We’re not trying to be Ja’Tavion, we’re trying to be Gunnar Helm, Juan Davis, Amari Niblack, whoever’s in there,” he asserted. “We’re trying to be the best version of ourselves.”
Helm’s contributions to the Longhorns’ offense were evident last season, with 14 receptions for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Stepping up in critical moments, such as in the game against Oklahoma, Helm proved his reliability and playmaking ability.

Coach Steve Sarkisian commended Helm’s growth and impact within the team, noting his increased responsibilities and impressive performance during spring practices.
“Gunnar a year ago had a really good season for us,” Sarkisian acknowledged. “We put more on Gunnar’s plate, and he really responded at a high level. You can feel his confidence this spring.”
As the Longhorns prepare to showcase their progress in the Orange-White Spring Game, Helm stands poised to seize the opportunity and make his mark on the upcoming season. With his determination and talent, he is primed to lead Texas to new heights in 2024.
