“We’re gonna take it easy”:Michail Antonio
Michail Antonio has stirred up some excitement before West Ham United’s showdown with Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League tonight. The team is currently in Germany gearing up for this crucial quarter-final first-leg match.
Interestingly, Leverkusen’s official website has already taken a jab at West Ham’s defense, calling it ‘susceptible’. Nevertheless, David Moyes is determined to lead his squad to the BayArena and put a damper on Leverkusen’s aspirations.
Leverkusen has been a formidable force this season, undefeated in 41 matches across all competitions and comfortably leading the Bundesliga table by 16 points ahead of Bayern Munich.
The challenge ahead for West Ham is significant, and Michail Antonio’s recent remarks certainly haven’t made it any easier. In a recent podcast appearance, the Jamaican international shared his thoughts on the upcoming match:
“When people expect us to lose, other things happen. Remember Tottenham in 2016? They came to us as league leaders, but I stopped them. Two years ago, we faced Sevilla away, lost 1-0, everyone thought it was over. But we came back and knocked them out. Last year, Fiorentina was favored, but we ended up holding the trophy. We’ll approach Leverkusen with confidence, do our best, and make our fans proud.”
While Antonio’s optimism is commendable, his words might just fuel Leverkusen’s determination even more. Critics, including Gabby Agbonlahor, have previously called out Antonio for speaking too freely.
In light of this, perhaps it would be wiser for Antonio and his teammates to let their performance on the pitch do the talking.
