Rob Thomson Offers Insight on Potential Roster Changes for Phillies
As the Philadelphia Phillies navigate through the early stages of the 2024 MLB season, there are murmurs of potential roster adjustments looming on the horizon. With the first week of baseball behind them, the Phillies find themselves at a 4-5 record, experiencing a rollercoaster of highs and lows.
Amidst the mixed performances, there have been shining moments from unexpected sources. Spencer Turnbull, in particular, made an impressive Phillies debut, showcasing his talent with a stellar outing against the Cincinnati Reds. Signed on a one-year, $2 million deal in the offseason, Turnbull’s zero-run performance over five innings underscored his value to the team.
Ace pitcher Zack Wheeler has also demonstrated his prowess, tallying an impressive 15 strikeouts while conceding only one earned run in 12 innings. However, despite his standout performances, a combination of blown leads and insufficient run support has denied him a victory thus far.
Offensively, Brandon Marsh and Kyle Schwarber have emerged as early contributors. Marsh boasts a .280 batting average with a .816 OPS, along with two home runs and five RBIs, while Schwarber has maintained a solid .250 average and a .742 OPS, accompanied by seven runs scored, two home runs, and five RBIs. Bryce Harper, the team’s superstar, has also made his mark with three home runs, including a grand slam, and a .290 batting average with a .998 OPS.
However, not all Phillies players have found their rhythm at the start of the season, facing challenges either at the plate or on the mound. While most have relatively secure spots on the roster to work through their struggles, a few may face the possibility of losing their place if improvements aren’t made soon.
Rob Thomson, providing crucial insights, identifies four Phillies players who could be at risk of losing their spots on the 26-man roster if their performance fails to improve by the end of April.
