I Expected More From You”: Reading FC Manager Pushes for Improvement After Victory
Reading manager Ruben Selles didn’t hold back in expressing his desire for more from his players, despite their hard-fought 1-0 home win against mid-table Northampton Town on Good Friday.
The Royals secured the victory thanks to a brilliant curling strike from substitute Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, with goalkeeper Joel Pereira earning Man of the Match honors for his outstanding saves, bringing his clean sheet tally to 10 for the season.
This win marked Reading’s second consecutive victory at home, following their impressive 4-0 triumph against Cambridge United a fortnight ago. Despite these positive results, the Berkshire club finds themselves in 17th position in League One, partly due to a six-point deduction for financial issues this season.
With a potential takeover on the horizon from an undisclosed consortium, Reading’s off-field troubles may soon come to an end. Nonetheless, speaking after the match on Friday, Selles revealed his disappointment with his team’s performance:
“I don’t think I got a big performance. I think I got a massive result, but I don’t think we got a massive performance. It wasn’t our best game, nowhere near good enough from any of us. I expected a bit more from us.”
Selles praised Pereira’s contribution but highlighted areas where improvement is needed, especially with key players missing: “We can do better. Don’t misunderstand me, I’ll take the victory any day… Today was not our best game – we can do better – but we were consistent enough to get the three points.”
Looking ahead to their Easter Monday clash against promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers, Selles acknowledged the challenge but remains optimistic about his team’s potential for a third consecutive victory. However, he knows it won’t be easy against Ian Evatt’s side, who are eager to bounce back from a goalless draw and continue their pursuit of the top two spots.
