Amidst a particularly strong class of quarterbacks, the Minnesota Vikings are reportedly interested in moving up in the draft to secure University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. ESPN reports suggest they’re eyeing a trade to secure a higher pick, possibly aiming for the fourth or fifth spot, currently holding the eleventh pick. The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers, holding the fourth and fifth picks respectively, may consider trading down, as they already have confidence in their current quarterbacks, Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray.
McCarthy, who recently led the Michigan Wolverines to a College Football Playoff championship, has drawn attention with his impressive collegiate career. Winning the Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year award in 2023 and earning two All-Big Ten Team selections, McCarthy has showcased his talent. With 44 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 72.3% completion rate in his final season, he’s become a sought-after prospect.
Despite initially flying under the radar, McCarthy’s recent Pro Day performance has piqued interest, with teams recognizing his potential. While the Vikings’ top brass may not have been present, quarterback coach Josh McCown closely observed McCarthy and other potential top picks. Although he may not stand out purely based on statistics or athleticism, there’s been a noticeable shift in perception in recent months.
It appears likely that McCarthy will be selected among the top ten picks, with teams expressing confidence in his ability to make an immediate impact as a starting quarterback.
