Reds’ David Bell issues ‘worrying’ injury updates and revealed that the 25-year-old infielder will be out…

Reds Manager David Bell has shared concerning updates on the injury status of one of his key players, Matt McLain, indicating that the 25-year-old infielder will be sidelined for an indefinite period. The specific nature of McLain’s injury remains uncertain, with further evaluation scheduled for Monday.

According to a report by Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Bell revealed that McLain’s shoulder issues would undergo assessment on Monday. The Reds are bracing themselves for the possibility of McLain missing the Opening Day lineup due to this injury setback. Last week, Bell had mentioned that the team was considering all options, including potential surgery, for McLain’s non-throwing shoulder, which had developed soreness following a dive during a practice session.

Bell expressed doubt regarding McLain’s availability for the start of the season, stating, “I think it’s safe to say he’s not going to start the year on time.” The manager emphasized the need for a second opinion before determining the extent of McLain’s absence and planning accordingly.

In light of McLain’s uncertain status, the Reds took proactive steps to address their infield depth. They acquired utility infielder Santiago Espinal from the Toronto Blue Jays, trading minor league pitcher Chris McElvain in return. President of baseball operations Nick Krall highlighted Espinal’s versatility and experience, citing his ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base effectively.

McLain had showcased considerable promise during his debut season in 2023, demonstrating his potential at the plate and in the field. Despite transitioning from shortstop to second base, McLain impressed with his offensive production, batting .290 with 16 home runs, 23 doubles, four triples, and 14 stolen bases. His absence could lead to adjustments in the Reds’ infield rotation, with players like Elly De La Cruz potentially seeing increased playing time at shortstop.

With the team already dealing with other roster challenges, such as an 8-game suspension for Noelvi Marte, the Reds will need to carefully manage their infield resources to compensate for McLain’s absence and maintain competitiveness throughout the season.
