Patrick Mahomes Pleads for L’Jarius Sneed to Stay with Kansas City Chiefs Before Trade Deal.
After four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, cornerback L’Jarius Sneed is bidding farewell to the team, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the Chiefs’ recent successes.
Patrick Mahomes, in a last-minute effort, implored the Kansas City Chiefs management to retain L’Jarius Sneed for the upcoming NFL season. However, despite Mahomes’ plea, Sneed was traded mere hours later.
Mahomes and Sneed had forged a strong camaraderie at Arrowhead Stadium, playing pivotal roles in securing back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 2022 and 2023. Their bond had deepened over the four seasons they spent together in Missouri.
Sneed is poised to ink a lucrative deal worth £57 million ($76 million) with the Tennessee Titans, boasting £41 million ($55 million) in guaranteed money. This contract positions him as one of the highest-paid players in his position in NFL history, with an anticipated earnings of £14 million ($19 million) over four years.
As Sneed embarks on this new chapter, the Chiefs will receive a third-round pick for 2025 and a seventh-round pick for 2024. Since his draft in 2020, Sneed had become an integral part of Andy Reid’s team. It’s evident that Mahomes and other teammates were hopeful that Sneed would continue donning the Chiefs’ jersey.
In a conversation with Fox4KC, Mahomes expressed his desire for Sneed to remain with the team for the 2024 season, although acknowledging his lack of influence over such decisions. He remarked, “I don’t have any say in that. I think you’ll hear from everybody on our team that we want Sneed.”
Providing insights into Sneed’s character, Mahomes described him as a driven individual, both on and off the field. He noted Sneed’s quiet demeanor but emphasized his relentless determination and leadership qualities.
Mahomes further expressed support for Sneed’s financial aspirations while expressing hope that he would continue his journey with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The talks surrounding Sneed’s departure emerged following Mahomes’ plea to Chiefs’ general manager, Bret Veach, as free agency loomed. Mahomes had voiced concerns about the feasibility of securing deals for both Sneed and defensive lineman Chris Jones.
In a candid discussion on “Up and Adams” after the Chiefs’ memorable Super Bowl victory in Las Vegas, Mahomes provided insights into his own future with the team, expressing his desire to stay while acknowledging the complexities of NFL roster management.
