The Reds hit with a huge setback as top prospect undergoes season-ending shoulder surgery…

The Cincinnati Reds have encountered a significant setback as promising prospect Edwin Arroyo is set to miss the entirety of the 2024 season due to shoulder surgery, according to reports. Arroyo sustained a labrum tear in his left shoulder during Spring Training while attempting to return to a base on a pickoff play.

Acquired by the Reds in a notable trade in 2022 that involved sending Luis Castillo to Seattle, Arroyo was considered a valuable asset, although not the primary piece of the deal. Despite a decent performance last season at High-A Dayton, where he posted a batting line of .248/.321/.427 with 13 home runs and 28 stolen bases, Arroyo’s potential as a switch-hitter with power and defensive ability had garnered attention from various baseball analysts.

Regarded among the top prospects within the Reds organization by multiple reputable sources, Arroyo’s injury is a setback to his development trajectory. While he was not expected to impact the major league team in the immediate future, the surgery will delay his progress and development opportunities, potentially affecting his debut timeline, which was previously projected for 2025.

Arroyo now faces an extensive rehabilitation process, aiming to return to Double-A for the 2025 season. Cincinnati will need to make decisions regarding his roster status by the end of that season, determining whether to add him to the 40-man roster or expose him to the Rule 5 draft.
