The Houston Texans are bolstering their defense with the addition of yet another former top-10 pick, according to reports. Under the leadership of head coach DeMeco Ryans, the Texans have been active in the offseason, securing five potential new starters for their defensive lineup.
Among these acquisitions is the signing of Pro Bowl EDGE rusher Danielle Hunter to a lucrative contract in free agency. While some moves flew under the radar, such as bringing in former Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah, it seems that general manager Nick Caserio is not finished yet.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Houston has further strengthened their cornerback position by adding C.J. Henderson, a former first-round pick who previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite Henderson’s struggles in his four-year career with the Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers, the Texans are willing to take a chance on the 25-year-old cornerback, viewing him as a potential reclamation project.
Henderson’s NFL journey has seen him participate in 49 games with 32 starts, with last season seeing him play in 12 games, starting seven. However, his performance yielded a high completion rate and quarterback rating when targeted, indicating his status as a reclamation project.
With the addition of Henderson, the Texans now boast five former first-round picks on their defense, including EDGE rushers like Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Barnett, as well as cornerbacks Derek Stinely Jr., Jeff Okudah, and C.J. Henderson, with four of them being top-10 selections. The aim is for Coach Ryans to work his magic and transform these talented but perhaps underperforming players into a formidable defensive force.
