The Cleveland Browns recently secured Jerry Jeudy with a substantial contract extension, but not everyone applauded the move.
Critics questioned the wisdom of the Browns’ decision, particularly given Jeudy’s failure to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in his NFL career thus far. However, Jeudy himself defended the extension, pointing out that his impressive statistics in 2022 were achieved despite missing several games due to injury.
While Jeudy’s exact contract terms remain undisclosed, his potential and contributions to the team are not lost on the Browns’ management. General Manager Andrew Berry expressed confidence in Jeudy’s ability to become a key player in the Browns’ offense, emphasizing his youth and potential for growth.
This move reflects a calculated risk by the Browns, reminiscent of their previous investment in tight end David Njoku, who flourished after signing a significant extension.
“While there had been some thought that the Browns would give him an extension to lower his 2024 salary-cap number, which is currently over $23 million, it was never a certainty,” Jackson wrote on March 19. “Now, an extension seems unlikely — at least before the season.”
As for the Browns’ top wide receiver, Amari Cooper, who is entering the final year of his contract, discussions about extending his tenure with the team are uncertain. While Cooper’s performance merits consideration for an extension, it remains unclear if such negotiations will occur before the upcoming season. Nonetheless, Cooper’s consistent excellence on the field makes him a valuable asset that the Browns may be reluctant to part with.
