Jameis Winston, once a top draft pick and hopeful starter, has landed with the Cleveland Browns, ready to serve as a backup to quarterback Deshaun Watson. This unexpected move came through a one-year deal during free agency, surprising many who anticipated the return of Joe Flacco to fill the backup position. “I’m a firm believer that nothing happens by coincidence,” Winston said on March 20 while being officially introduced. “So, when this opportunity came about, we locked in and we communicated, we collaborated on it, and this just felt like a great fit for me.”
Winston emphasized the importance of the relationship between him and Watson, which he believes will grow stronger over time. Having first encountered Watson in college back in 2014, Winston acknowledges Watson’s achievements and the pivotal role each team member plays in the Browns’ success. He aims to provide support, encouragement, and resources to Watson, recognizing his status as the franchise quarterback.
