The Vikings finally confirm a double deal with defensive lineman & receiver…

The Minnesota Vikings are expanding their defensive line and wide receiver corps.

Minnesota has reached agreements with free agent defensive lineman Jerry Tillery and wide receiver Trent Sherfield, as confirmed by the team on Thursday.

Tillery, who played for the Raiders last season, appeared in all 17 games and started six, tallying 31 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery.

Originally drafted 28th overall by the Chargers in the 2019 NFL Draft, Tillery spent his initial three-plus seasons in Los Angeles, starting 29 of 54 games played. Midway through the 2022 season, the Chargers waived Tillery, who was then claimed off waivers by the Raiders before Week 11. Tillery, hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, attended Evangel Christian Academy, showcasing his talent with 93 tackles and 7.0 sacks as a senior. He committed to Notre Dame, initially slated as an offensive tackle before transitioning to defensive tackle. Tillery emerged as a full-time starter in his final two seasons at Notre Dame, amassing 84 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 17.5 tackles for loss in 25 games, graduating with a degree in economics from the College of Arts and Letters.

Sherfield, on the other hand, played for the Bills in 2023, recording 11 receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown in his sole season in Buffalo.

Before his stint in Buffalo, Sherfield played for the Miami Dolphins in 2022, achieving career highs with 30 receptions for 417 yards and two touchdowns. Joining the 49ers in 2021, Sherfield caught nine passes for 87 yards with a touchdown after three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

As an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt in 2018, Sherfield secured 19 receptions for 210 yards and a touchdown. Over the subsequent two seasons, he added nine catches for 130 yards but didn’t score in 2019 or 2020.

With 78 career receptions, 930 yards, and five receiving touchdowns, Sherfield has been a consistent special teams contributor, logging 1,031 career snaps in that phase.

At Vanderbilt in 2017, Sherfield served as a co-captain, concluding his college career with 136 receptions for 1,869 yards, ranking eighth in school history in both categories.

The acquisitions of Tillery and Sherfield offer valuable additions to the Vikings’ roster, bolstering their lineup for the upcoming season.
