Joe Mixon has landed a lucrative deal following his trade from the Cincinnati Bengals to the Houston Texans. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Mixon, the former Bengals running back, has inked a three-year contract extension worth $27 million with his new team, including $13 million guaranteed.
This contract extension sheds light on how teams value players differently. Despite Mixon’s seven seasons of productivity with the Bengals, the team opted to part ways with him, trading him away rather than continuing to pay him. Initially, the Bengals were considering releasing him outright.
On the other hand, the Texans were eager to acquire Mixon and commit significant resources to him after losing Devin Singletary in free agency. In Houston, Mixon will join a youthful Texans roster featuring quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receivers Nico Collins and Tank Dell.
Both teams may ponder the consequences of their decisions regarding Mixon. He played a pivotal role in Cincinnati’s offense in recent years, and his absence will undoubtedly alter the team’s dynamics. While Cincinnati has brought in Zack Moss as a potential replacement and could elevate Chase Brown’s role, there’s uncertainty about their ability to replicate Mixon’s productivity. Should Mixon thrive with the Texans while the Bengals’ running game falters, Cincinnati may rue not retaining him.
Conversely, the Texans might question their investment in a 27-year-old running back, considering the volatility of the NFL landscape. While Mixon’s talent warrants the contract, there are no guarantees in the league, and many teams have reservations about allocating significant funds to the running back position.
Time will be the ultimate judge of the Texans’ decision, but in the interim, Bengals fans will need to adjust to seeing Mixon in a different uniform.
