Phillies’ Head Coach shares his thoughts on four players the team should sign to contract extensions before Bryce Harper…

Four Philadelphia Phillies players should be prioritized for contract extensions over Bryce Harper, despite his desire for one. After securing ace pitcher Zack Wheeler with a lucrative three-year, $126 million deal, the Phillies have strengthened their rotation significantly, suggesting an extended competitive window.

While Harper has been vocal about wanting to stay, extending him may not be the wisest move. By the end of his contract in 2031, he’ll be 38, an age where few position players maintain high productivity. Considering players like Miguel Cabrera, who faced declines in their late thirties, committing long-term to Harper may not be prudent.

Additionally, Trea Turner’s contract extends until 2033, when he’ll be 41, raising questions about the feasibility of retaining two aging stars at peak performance levels. Given this, prioritizing Harper’s extension over others may prove to be a costly mistake.

Instead, the Phillies should focus on extending other key players on the roster. Here are four players deserving of consideration for contract extensions before Harper.
