Southampton secured a 4-2 victory against Sunderland at St Mary’s, maintaining their hopes for automatic promotion.
After their midweek game against Preston North End was postponed due to a nearby fire, Southampton returned to action with a strong performance on Saturday.
Under Russell Martin’s management, they took a two-goal lead in the first half, but Sunderland managed to pull back with 20 minutes remaining. Martin turned to the bench, bringing on Joe Rothwell, a loanee from Bournemouth, who scored two crucial goals to secure the win.
Martin praised Rothwell, describing him as an exceptional finisher and highlighting his composure during the match.
Acknowledging Rothwell’s frustration at his limited game time despite his talent, Martin recognized the challenge of competition for starting spots. He mentioned Rothwell and Joe Aribo’s outstanding performances in previous games and emphasized the quality of options available in their position.
Looking ahead to their next match against Middlesbrough after an 18-day break, Martin faces a selection dilemma with Rothwell’s impressive form, considering whether to start him over Will Smallbone or Flynn Downes.
The break also provides an opportunity for key players like Kyle Walker-Peters and Ryan Fraser to recover, strengthening the team for the upcoming fixture against Middlesbrough.
