The young player for the Cincinnati Reds is probably going to bat second in the batting order.
De La Cruz: “I’m indeed grateful guys.”
Following his impressive major league debut last season, it appears that the Cincinnati Reds are leaning towards having Elly De La Cruz occupy the No. 2 spot in the batting order for the upcoming season.
Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell hinted at this possibility, stating that while spring training lineups shouldn’t be overanalyzed, De La Cruz has consistently been positioned in the No. 2 spot during spring training. Bell emphasized De La Cruz’s talent and speed, expressing a desire for him to be positioned towards the top of the lineup, although he noted that he wouldn’t force the placement. Throughout spring training, De La Cruz has predominantly occupied the second spot in the order.
“It’s obvious with his talent and his speed,” Bell said. “I’d like him to hit toward the top of the order if possible. I won’t force it. He’s the one I’ve thought most about. He has hit second for most of the spring
The 22-year-old made a significant impact upon his debut last June, contributing to the Reds’ success and keeping them in contention for a playoff spot until the season’s final weeks. Known for his exceptional speed and power, De La Cruz managed to hit 13 home runs and steal 35 bases in just 98 games, despite experiencing a slight dip in performance during September.
Positioned in the second spot of the lineup, De La Cruz is expected to have ample opportunities to score runs and utilize his base-stealing abilities. He will be positioned ahead of powerful hitters such as Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Jeimer Candelario.
De La Cruz is slated to be the team’s starting shortstop, partnering with second baseman Matt McLain.
