Senators’ General Manager Steve Staios Engages in Trade Discussions Ahead of NHL Deadline
As the NHL trade deadline approaches, Steve Staios, the Ottawa Senators’ president of hockey operations and general manager, is actively pursuing deals while the team is on a road trip in California.
Staios and his hockey operations team have stationed themselves in California to manage trade negotiations, with the deadline set for Friday at 3 p.m. EST. Despite the team playing against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night, Staios was busy discussing potential trades with his advisors at a nearby hotel.
Although the Senators suffered a 2-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, Staios and his team opted not to attend the game. Their presence at the Kings game was uncertain at the time of reporting.
Staios is open to bolstering the Senators’ lineup through trades but is also focused on acquiring future assets. The team has decided to remain in Los Angeles until after the trade deadline before traveling to San Jose for their next game against the Sharks on Saturday.
Regarding potential trades, the Senators have received interest in defenseman Jakob Chychrun. However, it would require an offer that aligns with the team’s objectives to part ways with him. Despite speculation, no decision had been made regarding Chychrun’s status for the Kings game.
Another player under scrutiny is defenseman Erik Brannstrom, acquired in a previous trade with the Vegas Golden Knights. While the Senators are open to moving Brannstrom, finding a suitable deal has proven challenging. There’s also interest in center Mark Kastelic from other teams, with a potential trade for him on the horizon.
Injuries to key players, including center Josh Norris and defenseman Thomas Chabot, have complicated the Senators’ trade plans. With several players sidelined, Staios faces additional challenges in navigating the trade deadline.
