Mike Evans received assurances from the Buccaneers that they would go to great lengths to retain Baker Mayfield, according to reliable sources close to NFL insider Mike Florio.
This commitment to Evans came before he recently agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team. It’s unlikely the Buccaneers would invest heavily in Evans without a plan for a competent quarterback, hence the pledge to keep Mayfield.

There’s speculation that negotiations with Mayfield might be stalled due to the uncertain market set by Kirk Cousins. Mayfield, being younger and having a better playoff track record than Cousins, could be waiting to see the terms Cousins secures before committing to a deal with the Buccaneers or any other team.
Ultimately, the outcome might depend on which team offers the most lucrative deal, as a significant financial incentive could sway Mayfield’s decision.
