The Vikings explained why the team released the 25-year-old running back…

The Minnesota Vikings made the decision to part ways with running back Alexander Mattison on Monday. Mattison, who had begun the first 13 games of the previous season as the starter before being replaced by Ty Chandler in December, is now a free agent.

The 25-year-old had signed a two-year contract worth $7 million with the Vikings last spring. However, his 2024 cap hit was set at $4.6 million. While Mattison managed to rush for 700 yards on 180 carries, averaging 3.9 yards per attempt, he did not score a rushing touchdown.

Additionally, he caught 30 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Drafted by the Vikings in the third round in 2019 from Boise State, Mattison served primarily as a backup and occasional substitute for Dalvin Cook during his four seasons with the team.

In 2023, he was promoted to the starting role following Cook’s departure. Throughout his tenure with the Vikings, spanning 75 games with 19 starts over five seasons, Mattison accumulated 2,370 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 584 carries, along with 100 receptions for 718 yards and six touchdowns.
