The Philadelphia Flyers are actively seeking stability in their backup goalie position, acknowledging recent shortcomings with Cal Petersen and emphasizing the need for consistency.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports a potential reunion between the Flyers and former goalie Martin Jones, currently with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto’s decision to retain Jones off waivers is attributed to the Flyers’ interest.
Friedman suggests that Philadelphia may also consider adding an inexpensive goalie or forward to bolster their roster, potentially as a gesture of appreciation to the team’s dedicated players.
Acquiring Jones off waivers would be a cost-effective move for the Flyers, although it may require them to waive Felix Sandstrom again unless they opt to carry three goalies into the postseason. Despite Jones’ underwhelming performance during his previous tenure with the Flyers, he has been dependable for the Maple Leafs this season, boasting solid stats in 20 appearances.
However, it’s worth noting that Jones has had limited NHL starts recently, winning his last two outings.
