The Reds are aiming to capitalize on a promising 2023 season and are eyeing a postseason berth. They finished with an 82-80 record, securing third place in the NL Central. This season showed potential for future success, and we’ll now delve into some of the key highlights.
Spencer Steer had a strong season, boasting a .271 batting average with 23 home runs, 86 RBIs, and 74 runs, along with 15 stolen bases. However, the standout performer was rookie shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who made a significant impact with a .235 batting average, 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 67 runs in 388 at-bats. De La Cruz also showcased his speed, stealing 35 bases, including a memorable sequence where he swiped three consecutive bases in a single game.
Another standout young player is Matt McLain, who impressed with a .290 batting average, 16 home runs, 50 RBIs, and 65 runs, along with 14 stolen bases in 365 at-bats. Jonathan India contributed solidly, hitting .244 with 17 home runs, 61 RBIs, 78 runs, and 14 stolen bases.
In the pitching rotation, Andrew Abbott emerged as a breakout star, posting an 8-6 record with a 3.87 ERA in 21 starts. Abbott’s diverse pitch arsenal makes him a formidable force, especially as a fly-ball pitcher. Closer Alexis Diaz also shone, converting 92.5% of his save opportunities and holding opposing hitters to a .153 average. His 95-MPH fastball and deceptive slider were key weapons.
The Reds have a promising new prospect in Noelvi Marte, who has 20/20 potential and is expected to debut at third base. Marte was acquired in a trade for Luis Castillo. Additionally, the Reds added Jeimer Candelario from the Chicago Cubs, who contributed a .251 batting average, 22 home runs, 70 RBIs, and 77 runs during his time with the Cubs and Washington Nationals.
