The Vikings trade up three spots for J.J. McCarthy in the new Ringer mock draft…

In a recent mock draft by The Ringer’s Danny Heifetz, the Vikings make a strategic move by trading up three spots with the Falcons, giving up a third-round pick to secure Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy at No. 8. Although the Vikings don’t have a 2024 third-rounder due to a previous trade, let’s assume it’s a 2025 third-rounder for the sake of this scenario.

The Falcons, also in need of a quarterback, are expected to pursue a veteran option like Justin Fields or Kirk Cousins, leaving McCarthy available for the Vikings. With Kirk Cousins likely leaving in free agency and only having Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens under contract, the Vikings are in dire need of a quarterback.

McCarthy, despite being criticized for his game management style at Michigan, is only 21 and has the potential to thrive in a system similar to that of Kyle Shanahan’s. If the Vikings can’t secure a higher pick for Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, McCarthy seems like their best bet for a franchise quarterback in this draft.

While Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr. could be options, McCarthy’s youth and potential make him a more attractive choice. Trading up to No. 8 for McCarthy is seen as a fair value, especially considering the potential payoff if he becomes a successful starter for the Vikings.
