DeMeco Ryans Updates on Jonathan Greenard, Dalton Schultz Contract Talks…
The Houston Texans are gearing up for free agency, with the possibility of offering long-term extensions to key players like tight end Dalton Schultz and defensive end Jonathan Greenard. While neither player is guaranteed to return, the team is considering lucrative extensions thanks to an expanded salary cap. DeMeco Ryans, the team’s new coach, has a say in these negotiations. When asked about Greenard, Ryans praised his performance but emphasized that nothing is certain in free agency.
“JG did a great job for us,” said Ryans at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He was productive and physical, and we’ll see how free agency plays out. We love JG and what he did for us this year.” Greenard had a standout season, leading the team in sacks and tackles for loss. He showcased his skills in several games, including a division-clinching win over the Tennessee Titans. Spotrac projected his annual salary at $13.4 million, but given his performance, he could demand more, possibly up to $25 million annually.
Schultz, who signed a one-year deal after leaving the Dallas Cowboys, made a significant impact on the Texans’ passing game. Ryans praised his performance in critical moments, especially during two-minute drives and on third downs. “Dalton did a great job for us,” said Ryans. “We’ll see what happens with Dalton in free agency, but I’m very proud of what he did for us last year.”
The Texans’ offense is expected to remain largely unchanged, with the return of offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson. Despite a new coach, quarterback, and young talent, the Texans doubled their win total and returned to the postseason for the first time in four years.
