The Chicago Bears are facing a pressing need to bolster their wide receiver corps this offseason. One potential solution lies in a trade for Courtland Sutton, a talented wide receiver currently under contract with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos, under a new coaching staff and in the midst of a roster overhaul, could stand to save $9.6 million this year by trading or releasing Sutton. This suggests that they may be open to trade offers for the receiver.
Sutton, who had a breakout second NFL season with 1,112 yards and 2.08 yards per route run, suffered an ACL tear in 2020, which disrupted his momentum. Despite this setback, he has consistently recorded 770 or more yards in each of the last three years, showing an upward trend in his efficiency, with his yards per route run increasing from 1.43 to 1.55 and then 1.66 last season. At 28 years old, Sutton still has potential for growth, especially if he finds himself in a more favorable situation.
For the Bears, acquiring Sutton could provide a significant boost to their receiving corps, complementing D.J. Moore’s abilities and giving a rookie quarterback a strong set of weapons to work with. By adding a third receiver in the draft, the Bears could enter the 2024 season with a well-rounded group of receivers, setting up their quarterback for success.
Given the potential benefits for both teams, the Bears should seriously consider pursuing a trade for Sutton. If the Broncos are indeed open to offers, the Bears would be remiss not to explore the possibility of adding Sutton to their roster.
