The Texans’ 2024 NFL power rankings have been released, and they are placed fifth overall, ahead of teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins. This high ranking is attributed to their successful first year under head coach DeMeco Ryans, where they went 10-7, won the AFC South, and defeated the Cleveland Browns 45-14 in the Wild Card round. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud had an outstanding season and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. Defensive Rookie of the Year went to Will Anderson Jr., who was drafted third overall by the Texans. Bobby Slowik, a popular head coaching candidate, returned to Houston as the offensive coordinator. Ryans himself was a Coach of the Year contender, losing the tiebreaker to the coach he defeated in the playoffs.
The Texans’ ranking has significantly improved since the last power rankings, where they were ninth. This change is attributed to their impressive playoff performance against the Browns, who were ranked third at the time. The Texans have also been praised for their future prospects, with $57.4 million in cap space and a strong regular-season record, tying for the 10th-best record after having the second-worst record the previous year.
Looking ahead, the Texans have the 11th-best odds to win the Super Bowl next season, according to DraftKings. Their odds have seen a significant improvement from last preseason, where they were +20,000 to win the Super Bowl, to now being +2,500 on BetMGM. This 17,500 difference is the largest swing from preseason to post-Super Bowl, surpassing the next team by 5,500 (Arizona Cardinals).
