Texans’ C.J. Stroud breaks the silence and speaks up in defense of the 22-year-old quarterback…

Texans’ C.J. Stroud Stands by Friend Bryce Young Amidst Rookie Struggles

In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans held the first two picks, choosing quarterbacks Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, respectively.

Looking back, the Panthers may regret their decision.

While Young faced difficulties in his rookie season, Stroud excelled, guiding the Texans to an AFC South division title and a playoff victory with impressive performances.

Nevertheless, Stroud has come forward to support his close friend, emphasizing that Young shouldn’t shoulder all the blame.

“In his position, many things were beyond his control,” Stroud remarked during an episode of The Pivot podcast. “You can’t execute a play if there’s a missed block or a dropped pass. Bryce showcased many positive aspects in his game. He’s destined for greatness, but it requires time.”

Young’s rookie stats included 2,877 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, with a completion rate of 59.8% and a passer rating of 73.7.

In contrast, Stroud, in his 16 appearances, amassed 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, completing 63.9% of his passes with a passer rating of 100.8, earning him a Pro Bowl nod.

Stroud acknowledged the divergent paths they’ve taken, expressing hope for improvement in their respective second years. He offered encouragement to Young, emphasizing his potential.

While Young faced significant challenges in Carolina, enduring 62 sacks due to inadequate protection from his offensive line, Stroud stressed the demanding nature of the NFL.

Despite Young’s struggles, if he fails to rebound soon, the Panthers may rue their decision not to select Stroud.
